Personal Directional Science
What Is the Kua Number - and Why Does Your Direction Matter?
Every person carries an invisible directional signature. In the Eight Mansions school of Feng Shui - a system that sits comfortably alongside the principles of Vastu Shastra - this signature is called the Kua number (also written as Gua number). It is calculated from your birth year and gender and it tells you with surprising precision which of the eight compass directions work with your energy and which work against it.
This is not merely about where your front door faces. Your Kua number governs the direction you should face at your work desk, the orientation of your bed as you sleep, the position of your kitchen stove and even the placement of your most important rooms. When your environment is aligned with your personal directional energy, decision-making feels clearer, health holds steadier and relationships carry less friction.
The Kua Number Formula Explained
The calculation is rooted in the ancient Lo Shu magic square. Your birth year's digits are first summed to a single number. For males, this number is then subtracted from 11. For females, 4 is added. If the resulting number is 5 - a transitional number with no independent direction set - males use 2 and females use 8 instead.
The result is a number from 1 to 9 (excluding 5) and it places you firmly in one of two groups: the East group (Kua 1, 3, 4, 9) or the West group (Kua 2, 6, 7, 8).
East Group vs West Group - Kua Number Groups in Vastu
The East group and West group are fundamentally different in their directional affinities. East group individuals find their four auspicious directions in the east, southeast, south and north - directions associated with growth, vitality and upward momentum. West group individuals flourish when facing west, northwest, southwest and northeast - directions linked with stability, harvest and lasting foundations.
Placing an East group person in a West group home (where the house's best energy flows in West group directions) is a common but correctable misalignment. A Vastu consultation can identify these conflicts and suggest remedies without requiring structural changes.
The Four Auspicious Directions and What They Mean
Sheng Chi - your wealth and success direction. This is the most powerful of the four auspicious directions. Facing it while working or negotiating amplifies your opportunities for abundance and recognition. Tien Yi - the health direction, associated with healing and physical vitality. This is the ideal direction to face during illness recovery or where you place a sickbed. Nien Yen - the relationships and longevity direction. Marriages, partnerships family harmony benefit most from this direction in the bedroom and dining areas. Fu Wei - the personal growth direction, supporting steady self-improvement, study and spiritual development.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Kua number?

Ghar ki main entry, sone ki disha, aur kaam karne ki disha - sab Kua number se tay ki ja sakti hain.
How is the Kua number calculated?
For males: add the digits of your birth year to get a single digit, then subtract from 11. For females: add the digits of your birth year to get a single digit, then add 4. If the result is 5, males take 2 and females take 8 as their Kua number.
What are East group and West group Kua numbers?
Kua 1, 3, 4 and 9 are the East group - their auspicious directions are East, Southeast, South and North. Kua 2, 6, 7 and 8 are the West group - their auspicious directions are Southwest, West, Northwest and Northeast.
Why is Kua number 5 not used?
Kua 5 is considered a transitional number in the Eight Mansions system and does not have its own directional set. By convention, males with Kua 5 adopt the directions of Kua 2 and females with Kua 5 adopt the directions of Kua 8.
Can I use Kua number for my home main entrance?
Yes. Your Sheng Chi direction - the most powerful of your four auspicious directions - is ideal for your main entrance, the direction you face while working or your head-pointing direction while sleeping.
What if my partner and I have different Kua groups?
This is very common and entirely manageable. A professional Vastu consultant evaluates both Kua numbers together with the property layout and recommends room placements and sleeping orientations that honour both partners energies without conflict.
